Sixteenth Temple Tokozan Eishoji

Sect: Soto Zen Buddhism
Principal Deity: Yakushi Ruriko Nyorai (Medicine Buddha of Lapis Lazuli Light)
Founded: Unknown
Goeika (Sacred Chant): “Kanzeon, the voice of the Dharma echoes, Through the pines, the green leaves whisper, May their blessings endure forever.
Emanation Form: Enmei Kannon (Life-Extending Kannon)

This form of Kannon is depicted wearing a crown and touching the right cheek with one hand. The Lotus Sutra states, “Even if one is cursed or poisoned with intent to kill, if they call upon Kannon’s power, the harm will return to the perpetrator instead.” Because of this, Enmei Kannon is believed to have the power to eliminate poisons and extend one’s lifespan.

○ History & Origins

Eishoji was rebuilt in the early Edo period (around 1650) and was originally a Shingon Buddhist temple called Kanpukuji. It later transitioned to the Soto Zen School and is now one of the 56 branch temples under Umonzan Ryutakuji Temple in Shirokawa Town, Higashiuwa District.
The temple is located on a hill overlooking the Hiromi River, a tributary of the Shimanto River, and vast rice fields. This site is believed to have once been the residence of the lord of Kagomori Castle. The mountain behind the temple still holds the extensive ruins of the ancient castle, preserving its historical significance.
The principal deity, Yakushi Nyorai, is especially unique, as it contains a sacred image within its body, a rare feature not found elsewhere in the prefecture. This makes it an important object of devotion for many believers.
