Sect: Shingon Buddhism, Omuro School
Principal Deity: Konpira Daigongen
Founded: 828
Goeika (Sacred Chant): “The god of the shore, revered since ancient times, Still today blesses the sacred act of using chopsticks.“
Emanation Form: Marofu Kannon (The Horse Groom’s Wife Kannon)

Marofu Kannon is depicted wearing a crown and celestial robes, standing with both hands gently clasped. She is said to have transformed into a beautiful woman who challenged men to memorize numerous Buddhist scriptures, promising to marry those who succeeded. This symbolizes her role in opening the hearts of those lost in delusion and guiding them towards the Buddhist path.
○ History & Origins
In 828 (Tencho 5), Kukai (Kobo Daishi), while traveling through Shikoku, received a divine revelation from Konpira Shin on this mountain, leading to the temple’s foundation. For over a thousand years, Hashikuraji has carried on its sacred traditions, serving as the Okunoin (inner sanctuary) of Konpira faith.
Following the divine oracle, a sacred jewel (Hoju) and a pair of chopsticks were enshrined as holy relics. This led to the name “Hashikura-dera,” meaning “The Temple of the Stored Chopsticks.”
To honor this tradition, August 4th was designated as “Chopstick Day” at the temple, where a chopstick memorial service is held. This practice has gained national recognition. Additionally, special ceremonial chopsticks such as: Choju-bashi (Longevity Chopsticks), Nini Funibashi (Oneness Chopsticks), Ohashi Hajime (First Chopsticks for Newborns), and Gokaku-bashi (Success Chopsticks) are widely sought for their spiritual blessings.
Located within the sacred grove of Kuradani, the temple houses six nationally designated Important Cultural Properties among its numerous cultural treasures. The morning and evening Goma fire rituals, initiated by Kukai himself, have been continuously performed without interruption since the temple’s founding.
