○ History & Origins

Enpukuji, a historic temple with over 1,300 years of history, was revitalized in the Edo period by the priest Yusho, who was deeply loved and protected by the local parishioners. The main deity, Enmei Jizo, is said to have been sculpted by Kobo Daishi and is enshrined as a hidden deity, offering salvation for all kinds of suffering.
In more recent history, the temple is connected to the famous director and screenwriter Daisuke Ito, who spent his childhood here. The temple is surrounded by numerous historical shrines and temples, including the Yamaguchi Reijin (Hidden Kami Kobu) and the famous “Tale of 808 Tanuki” (the great tanuki story of Matsuyama), which is listed among Japan’s top three tanuki legends. The area also features historical sites such as the “Net-catching Stone,” believed to be related to Kobo Daishi’s legendary encounter with a net.
