As this Kannon possesses these four virtues to the highest degree, it is called Tokuo Kannon.

○ History & Origins

In ancient times, this temple was known as Agashiyama Chotokuji. Chotokuji was founded in 1149 by Yagi Yorinori and his son Morimasa, who ruled this region. It flourished as one of Tosa’s prominent temples during the Kamakura period but suffered two major fires. Despite these hardships, it continued to exist in a modest form until the Muromachi period.
In the mid-1500s, a powerful local warlord, Motoyama Baikei, established 35 temples on the site of the former Chotokuji. The present-day Kongoji Temple was later built on this land in 1784 (Tenmei 4) by the Hosokawa clan, incorporating the main gate of Motoyama Castle as its temple entrance.
At the center of the temple stands Dainichi Nyorai, flanked by Bishamonten on the right and Kobo Daishi on the left. The elegant structure and serene atmosphere evoke the splendor of the Tenpyo era. Behind the temple lies a Mini 88 Sacred Sites pilgrimage route, and within the grounds, visitors can find Ichiso-an, a log cabin-style rest area. Please take your time to explore and pray at your leisure.
