○ History & Origins
Shiunzan Bodaiji Saikoji is a temple dedicated to Amida Nyorai (Amitabha Buddha). It belongs to the Koyasan Shingon sect and upholds the esoteric teachings of Kobo Daishi (Kukai).
According to temple tradition, the temple was founded by Gyoki Bosatsu (668–749) in the Nara period, though the details remain unclear. It was revived in 1005, 1334, and 1618 but suffered repeated destruction due to fires and wars. The current main hall was rebuilt at its present location in 1657 under Priest Yusho.
The temple gate was constructed in 1837 and is designated as a tangible cultural property of Awa City. Additionally, the seated statue of Kobo Daishi housed within is also recognized as a cultural treasure and is considered one of the five oldest of its kind in the prefecture.
